Summary

The Unisys Security Index surveyed more than 10,000 people in 12 countries: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, Germany, Hong Kong, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. The research showed that virtually all respondents in the 12 countries surveyed said they would take action of some kind after learning of a security breach involving their personal data.

Key Facts

  • Typically, 70-85 percent of a country’s respondents they would close their accounts with the organization responsible for the breach of their personal information. Almost all respondents in all 12 countries (80-90 percent) said they would change their passwords following a breach.
  • Roughly half of respondents in all 12 countries said they would take steps to publicly expose the issue of a data breach involving their personal data. Half or more said they would take legal action, although this proportion is much smaller in Belgium and The Netherlands.
  • A small percentage of respondents in most of the 12 countries (typically 20-30 percent) said they would continue doing business with an organization responsible for a breach of their personal data, while avoiding online transactions with that organization.
