Conducted twice a year, the Index provides a regular, statistically robust measure of concerns about four areas of security:
  • National security
  • Financial security
  • Internet security
  • Personal security
  • 83% of Britons are worried about becoming a victim of identity theft
  • Britons would prefer to verify their identity with a fingerprint scan (95%) and eye scan (90%), over a PIN number or password
  • 62% of consumers are apprehensive about shopping and banking online

What's new in the report

Almost three quarters of UK consumers do not trust the Government to keep their personal information secure and private, and almost two thirds regard financial institutions with the same mistrust. ID theft is now the biggest security concern for the UK public, above flu pandemics, terrorism and meeting financial obligations. Given the fear of fraud, support for widespread adoption of biometric security technologies has increased and people are more willing to provide fingerprint or iris scans than they were a year ago.
